Japanese Gardens
Location: Henderson, Auckland
Dates: May 2006 - January 2007
Details:
- Enhancement of the streetscape of the Waitakere Civic Centre
- Demolished the previous Japanese Gardens
- Constructed several integrated water features and a large timber framed pergola
- Excavated and moved several loads of unsuitable and contaminated
materials
Japanese Garden
- Lazy river and waterfalls were lined and constructed with waterproof concrete and clad with rocks and stones
- Based on a ‘contemplation’ theme and designed as a viewing garden
- Area planted with a mixture of New Zealand and Japanese native plants
Japanese Square
- Pergola and viewing platform constructed between the garden and
formal square
- Pergola raised timber slat over a pine and jarrah deck
- The sides were constructed from bamboo screens to create an ‘enclosed’ feeling
- Finished with bands of honed, sandblasted and exposed aggregate
- Concrete pattern to resemble the geological layers of the Waitakere Ranges
- Water features fed through a narrow canal
Civic Square
- Designed as an ‘informal’ meeting space and a transition between buildings
- Finish was a patchwork of various concrete finishes
- Manholes and the balance tank for the water features were located under the deck to alleviate manholes in the concrete
- Bubble jet and fountains with LED lighting
