This was multi-disciplined landscape construction project involving earthworks, stormwater drainage, car park construction, concreting, street furniture, sports field construction and amenity planting.
Sediment control was installed using diversion channels and slit fencing leading into a sediment containment pond that was to remain on site after the completion of the contract. The sediment pond was treated wih flocculants at times of heavy rainfall.
The earthworks involved 8000m³ of topsoil strip and cut to fill to form a new playing field. This was carried put with 2 motor scrapers during the summer months. Being a volcanic area rock was located about 1m below the soil surface and 200m³ of rock had to be broken out and removed from site. The concrete footpath was excavated for and the arisings included in the fill.
The stormwater drainage system was installed before the replacement of the topsoil. Volcanic rock was also located in the area during pipe excavation and had to be disposed of off site.
300m of pipe work and associated cesspits and manholes were installed and tested.
The new footpath network involved the laying of 200m² of 25mpa tinted concrete over several stages to coincide with the re-topsoiling and stabilisation of the areas.
The construction of the new asphalt car park and ball court was added to the orginal contract before work commenced. This work involved sub base preparation, concrete kerbing, stormwater drainage, asphalting, line marking and suitable timber bollards. Three small single hoop ball courts were incorporated into the design with an integrated path and seating areas. These were constructed using different coloured concretes and finishes.
Once the area was re-topsoiled it was seeded with a suitable sports field seed mix and maintained to practical completion. Maintenance involved mowing, selective weed control and fertiliser applications.
Tree and shrub planting throughout the reserve and around the car park was completed during the winter months and maintained up until the job was handed over to the local authority.
