Location: Flat Bush, Manukau
Dates: February 2007 - February 2008
Details:
The construction of the Promenade and Cultural Walkway was one of the main areas of hard landscaping in the development of Barry Curtis Park at Flat Bush.
This contract involved a considerable amount of earthworks to level the site and construct a large mound at the corner of chapel Rd and Stancomb Rd. The mound is split down the middle by fern gully which will be one of the princople entrances into the park. This walkway opens out onto the Cultural Lawn and Promenade. The Promenade consist of a central swale, planted with kaunuka and sedges. This is crossed in several locations by wide jarrah timber boardwalks. The swale is edged with rock filled gabion baskets that retain concrete paving on both sides. The eastern edge of the promenade is retained by a basalt veneer wall with lighting inserts. The wall is recessed in three locations by a sandpit, a compacted gravel stage, and a concrete stage. Extensive semi mature Pohutakawa plantings were carried out above the basalt retaining wall.
The main promenade walkway consist of exposed aggregate Hawkes Bay Peddle concrete with bespoke timber and steel seating on one side and three large stage platforms on the other. Two of the stages consist of orange gravel surrounded by a concrete step. The other stage is constructed from Vitex timber with flat bar grill inserts under which are lights.
The whole of the western area is surrounded by a concrete step down to the cultural lawn. The grass areas of the promenade are all irrigrated and split into sections by timber or sandblasted concrete strips.
The western boundary of the cultural lawn consist of four flights of pre-cast concrete terrace units linked by concrete steps. The units consist of several different concrete design finishes with integral timber seats and lighting.
The contract ran over the allotted contract period due to the time when we were allowed to complete the earthworks. We also had to source a further 3000m³ of suitable fill to complete the mound due to the material not being on site. The client was extremely happy with the finished product. The concrete and timber finishes are of a very high standard.
