Capell Avenue Roundabout Upgrade

We upgraded the intersection of Capell Avenue and Domain Road in Lake Hāwea (Te Waimāori o Hāwea), transforming a confusing three-way give-way into a modern roundabout. This project is a big step forward for road safety and efficiency in the Upper Clutha region, making travel smoother for locals and visitors alike.

Our client, Queenstown Lakes District Council, wanted a solution that improved safety and supported sustainable outcomes. The upgrade reduces crash risk, enhances pedestrian access with a refuge crossing, and future-proofs the intersection for growing traffic volumes, while minimising environmental impacts through smart material reuse and local resourcing.

The works included building a three-leg roundabout over the Hāwea Dam, installing new kerbs, footpaths, stormwater systems, signage, and line marking. We resurfaced the pavement, added a mountable apron for heavy vehicles, and relocated telemetry equipment off-road. The roundabout measures approximately 30 metres in diameter, with upgraded approaches and splitter islands.

Despite unexpected ground conditions and tight tolerances, we delivered the project on time in April 2024. The result creates safer journeys, better walking and cycling connections, and a resilient intersection that supports tourism, local businesses, and community wellbeing for years to come.
