Onetai Stream Bridge Replacement
We’re proud to have delivered the new Onetai Stream Bridge on State Highway 26 (Te Awa Onetai), north of Paeroa. This project makes a key route between Waikato and the Coromandel Peninsula safer and more resilient.
Waka Kotahi wanted a future-proofed bridge that would last 100 years and integrate into the local natural environment. It’s Aotearoa’s first state highway bridge to be built from new in 50 years, featuring strong, low-carbon timber decking and beams.
The works involved a full road closure for four weeks, demolition of the existing bridge, built in 1976, and rapid construction using off-site prefabrication. Innovative temporary works included a pedestrian bridge for local school children and a custom crane pad for 40-tonne lifts. The project was completed 26 days ahead of schedule, with all major works delivered in just 28 days. The new bridge is 3 metres wider than the old one, with a total carriageway width of 10.2 metres, and has new side barriers and resilient foundations.
The new bridge improves safety for drivers and cyclists, supports local communities, and sets a blueprint for sustainable infrastructure nationwide. This work won a CCNZ Waikato Award for Category 2 (projects $1 – 5M) 2025, where it was recognised for its for innovation and community engagement.
