Peacocke Waikato River Bridge & Strategic Services
“Peacocke” is Hamilton City Council’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure project, built to support urban growth and strengthen community connection in south-west Kirikiriroa (Hamilton).
The project unlocks 720 hectares of new development, paving the way for around 20,000 new residents. It includes a 1.6 kilometre extension to Wairere Drive, upgrades to Peacockes Road and Westonlea Drive, and nearly 10 kilometres of shared paths for walking and cycling.
At its heart is Te Ara Pekapeka – a striking 180 metre bridge spanning the Waikato River. Created in partnership with the Tangata Whenua Working Group, its central v-pier features a woven steel lattice inspired by a traditional kete, with Maaori designs cast from hand-carved wood.
The Taurapa pedestrian bridge acts as a waharoa (gateway), with soaring steel masts and cultural artwork. The project also includes major intersections, underpasses, retaining walls, wetlands, and extensive earthworks and utility services – all designed to integrate with the whenua and support long-term wellbeing.
Peacocke is more than infrastructure. It is a celebration of place, people, and partnership – weaving together cultural heritage, environmental care, and future-focused design for generations to come.
This project was a finalist in the 2025 National CCNZ Awards. It also won Category 5 – Projects valued over $20 Million, and the Supreme award at the 2025 CCNZ Waikato awards.
