PUKEAHU NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL PARK AND ARRAS TUNNEL UNDERPASS
The Pukeahu National War Memorial is a high quality urban park providing a major focal point of remembrance. It was opened in time for the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in April 2015.
The National War Memorial Park was designed and built by an alliance team consisting of NZTA, Downer, HEB, Tonkin & Taylor and URS.
The underpass (named Arras Tunnel), a reinforced concrete structure approximately 280m long, has been designed to withstand a 1-in-2,500 year earthquake. Its construction allowed the 3 lanes of SH 1 to be placed underground from Sussex St to Taranaki St. This permitted the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park to be built above.
