The Waikato Expressway is providing a more effective and efficient transport network connecting the business centres of Waikato, Auckland and Bay of Plenty. The Cambridge section passes to the north and east of Cambridge.

It connects with the existing Tamahere interchange to the north and with the existing SH1 to the south of Cambridge town.

Interchanges have been built at Discombe Road, Victoria Road and at the southern end of the Expressway where it  joins the existing SH1.

Eight bridges were included in the scope; the largest being the Karapiro Stream Gully Viaduct crossing approximately 200m long and 40m high.

The Cambridge section:

  • links the Tamahere section of the Expressway to the existing SH1 south of Cambridge

  • reduces traffic congestion and intersection delays

  • significantly reduces through traffic in Cambridge

  • improves safety for pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists and traffic

  • reduce traffic noise within Cambridge township.
