Ō Mahurangi – Penlink

Seven kilometres. Five bridges. Massive improvement for Whangaparāoa residents.

Problems with travel to Whangaparāoa were identified as far back as the 1980s. Now, with the development of Ō Mahurangi – Penlink (short for Peninsula Link), and with massive growth expected for the Rodney District, these problems are being addressed.

Our role as a part of this alliance is to construct the 7 km greenfield road, running from SH1 at Redvale to Stillwater and Whangaparāoa. The route has been designed to reduce traffic congestion on Whangaparāoa Road, and provide safer conditions for road users as well as pedestrians and cyclists. HEB will construct the bridges and underpasses, earthworks, ground improvements and pavement.

Our work

Construction of the first-in-New Zealand Wēiti River Bridge, a 530-metre extradosed bridge.

1 million cubic metres of earthworks and ground improvements.

Construction of cross culverts, retaining walls, road pavement and shared user path.

Landscaping and offset mitigation planting.

Construction of four other bridge overpasses.

Sustainable Outcomes

Protecting our environment has been a big part of this project, given the scale of the works. So far we have successfully rehomed many native species, and will be undertaking significant native planting along the road corridor upon its completion.

We have also been working hard to support and grow local and Māori-owned businesses. We helped a number of small organisations develop their internal systems as a part of our tendering process, and are now working with many of them as they provide specialist expertise and labour hire to the project. We’re pleased to be able to offer work and networking opportunities, which we hope will continue to be fruitful long after the project concludes.
