Alexandra Airport Runway Resurfacing

After nearly four decades, the runway at Alexandra Airport (Te Papa Rererangi o Manuherikia) has been given a new lease of life. This project is a big win for aviation safety in Aotearoa, ensuring a critical regional asset is future-proofed for years to come.

Our client, Central Otago District Council, wanted a solution that was cost-effective and sustainable. The airport was closed for seven days while our team completed the reseal, applying a micro surfacing system designed to withstand high wear and tear. Rather than tear up and reseal the runway, we used SteelGuard XL, a treatment widely used overseas but new to Aotearoa, to lock in the existing chipseal and reduce loose aggregate that could damage aircraft. This innovative approach has extended the runway’s life by up to 10 years, saved significant cost compared to traditional mill-and-fill methods and reduced environmental impact.

The outcome is a safer, quieter, and more durable surface for emergency flights, tourism, and growing air traffic into Central Otago. This project sets a benchmark for sustainable aviation infrastructure and supports long-term social and economic wellbeing for the region.
