Halfmoon Bay Dolphin Pier
We’ve upgraded Tāmaki Makaurau’s Half Moon Bay vehicle ferry terminal, one of the city’s busiest ferry terminals and a gateway to Waiheke Island.
Auckland Transport needed to improve operational safety while minimising environmental impact. To support this, we’ve replaced the ageing mooring “dolphins,” heavy-duty marine structures that guide ferries during daily berthing and keep them moored safely overnight. This work has future-proofed the terminal and supports larger vessels to berth.
Our work included replacing two existing dolphin structures, and adding a new northern dolphin, all supported by reinforced concrete piles and protected by timber fendering. As we were building within a live terminal environment, we used barges and temporary structures to ensure ferry services could continue uninterrupted. Work was scheduled around sailing timetables, with noise and vibration controls and shutdown procedures in place to protect the marine ecosystem.
This project is a key step in future-proofing marine infrastructure for Tāmaki Makaurau, ensuring safe, reliable connections for communities and visitors alike.
